Conventions of a Pop Princess

Conventions of the genre- Pop Princess

After researching the conventions of a pop princess i have found the following:
  • A popular and beautiful young female singer
Pop princesses are known as innocent, and fairly young singers that deal with typical topics like boys and happiness and general teenage life. They are also trend setters with clothes and the way that they act so normally set a very good example for their fans.

A good example of a pop princess is Taylor Swift. She is known for her soft but sweet voice and her love and passion for music. The paleness of her skin represents how innocent, sensible and feminine she is. The windswept hair is also very feminine. The red dress and lipstick represents the passion that she puts into her music and her love for it.

Analysis of Only girl in the world- Rihanna

Rihanna- Only girl in the world

ANALYSIS:

In the music video it reflects onto the title of the song, a girl alone in a field represents Rihanna being the  'only girl in the world'. It is a POP genre which is a very popular genre in the music world and chart music so most people would recognise Rihanna and her music.

Image of the artist
I think that in this video, the artist Rihanna wants to portray a nice, feminine happy and flowy atmosphere- we can tell as the song is very upbeat and jolly. The setting is very pink, which also suggests femininity along with her floaty top. We can tell from this that the target audience would be fairly young people, also females. The use of the red background is striking and adds to the unrealistic idea of wanting to be the only girl in the world.

Camera, Angles and Editing
The camera continuously is used to shoot the artist as she is the only person in the music video. It also uses slow motion as Rihanna falls onto the flowerbed which suggests an extremely happy, care free girl. The most unusual editing technique used is to change the colour of the shot.

Purpose of a music video

The purpose of a music video are as followed;

* For artist image, to present them in a certain way

*It makes the singer more recognisable and makes the music more memorable as the music would be associated with the music video.

*To sell music because of the video- would improve the sales as not only could they buy the songs but but the video too.

* Provides a visual for the viewer, gives us a clearer image of the genre.

* For the viewers entertainment, if there is humour in the video for example then it will be even more pleasing for the audience.

Analysis of Rihanna- Talk that talk album

Rihanna- Talk that talk album cover analysis

-In this album cover the most striking action that we see is the smoke coming out of her mouth. This shows her rebellious personality, her individuality and her 'naughty' side which gives her sex appeal

- Rihanna is looking straight at the camera and she is positioned in the centre of the image which automatically brings the attention onto her. The fact that it is a close up emphasises her dominance on screen. We see no clothes in the picture which gives her sex appeal too as it is teasing because we cannot see any part of her body apart from her shoulders. Her facial expression gives a seductive STAR IMAGE of her but also shows she has attitude.

-The font of the letter 'R' at that top left hand corner is very sharp and striking which gives her her own view to the public which is very different to anyone elses. The icon within the letter R has newspaper in it which we can read as a girl that is talked/gossiped about alot. Also the 'talk that talk' at the bottom is in capitals and in a very plain font which shows that she doesn't need to impress with fancy writing, as her photo is striking enough to get attention.

- The fact that her hair is down and that it is big and has volume shows her femininity, and so do her lips as the light is reflecting off of them to emphasise that they are big.

- The whole picture is in black and white which is very minimal. The photo in itself attracts attention even with no cover.

- On the back of the cover the writing is in red, which is bold and stands out from the rest as it is all in black and white as i previously commented on.

-The way that Rihanna is upside down emphasises how she goes against rules so chooses to do things her own way.

- She has a mixture of femininity and masculinity as she is wearing a suit jacket and a bow-tie with a cigarette however the stockings show her feisty side which is rather revealing.

What i have learnt in my first lesson

Today on Tuesday 19th June i returned back to school, and starting my A2 media studies course. We learnt about 'Artists as text' and that a famous singer for example has their own style of text/font which audiences link with the famous person. We learnt about the way that singers are presented on Digipacks, e.g Brtiney Spears on her digipack was presented as an innocent religious schoolgirl, we knew this because of her prayer pose. She was also positioned on the left hand side which showed that she wasn't centre of attention and in fact the attention was brought onto the text which was 'Britney Spears- ....baby one more time'.

Overall i learnt that there are hidden messages into digipacks, and the majority of the time parts of it are there for a reason, to try and portray that particular singer in such a way.

Preliminary filming update

On 5th July we started our filming for The Script- Man who cant be moved. We produced roughly 10 seconds of usable film but however the camera ran out of battery so was unable to carry on. We will resume filming at another point this week or next week, whenever is an appropriate time during media lessons.

Preliminary task

Location

Our location will be at our school Newport Free Grammar School as we are able to film fairly similar shots by crossings and on pavements. As we have a crossing that divides our school into half, this shot can be easily replicated but obviously being aware of cars and other means of transport passing by. We will make sure that on the days we film, the weather will be relatively sunny as we have to capture a man's shadow on a pavement.

Costume

The Script's Danny wears a leather jacket and a pair of casual jeans. He isn't wearing anything over the top or eccentric which takes the focus away from the costume and more onto the singing and the lyrics within this song. We will also try to recreate this, using an actor that wears casual clothes.
